It was the fall of 1977 when I opened my shop, which I originally named The Framing Studio. It was the beginning of an entirely new road in my life; and like the other roads I've been down, I had no clue where this one might lead. My original location was a 600 sqaure-foot space downtown that was hardly large enough for a frame shop - let alone a gallery - but somehow I managed to cram it all in there. I was so naive that I thought all I would need to accommodate the public was about 20 different mat colors and a few dozen molding samples.
Today, I have more than 2,000 frames and over 300 mats to choose from; it still seems like it's not enough. I survived this start-up experience because God looks after dummies. The sign that I spent a week painting fell and shattered about an hour after it was put up. so at that moment, I decided that if I were to make it, it won't be because of a sign. It was 33 years before I put up another one.
